Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cleaning in San Clemente, CA | Ashwood Chimney Sweep
We service and clean Gelco fireplaces and inserts across San Clemente, from the Pier Bowl up through Forster Ranch and Talega. Independent, not manufacturer-authorized, but we know how Gelco dampers, caps, and fireboxes hold up in salt air. The biggest difference here: your Gelco unit is corroding from the outside in, and a standard sweep that ignores dampers and caps misses the actual problem. Call (833) 805-3229 and we’ll diagnose it properly, not just run the brush.
Why San Clemente Residents Choose Us for Gelco Service
Gelco units in coastal air don’t fail the way inland units do. Most companies show up, sweep the flue, hand you a receipt. We check the damper pivot, the cap mesh, the crown mortar, and the firebox seams, because in San Clemente those components rust years before creosote becomes the issue. Norm Castillo has spent close to two decades working chimneys and venting in south Orange County. He grew up watching how metal fails, then learned the building systems side properly through Chaffey College’s HVAC program before narrowing to flue and firebox work. That background matters when a Gelco damper is seized from rust and the real question is whether the shell is still sound. We carry OEM Gelco parts where available and fit quality aftermarket dampers, caps, and refractory panels when originals are discontinued. You get one crew that can identify the problem, scope the flue, and do the repair. No hand-off to a different company.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in San Clemente
- Seized or jammed damper pivot arms – Salt-laden onshore moisture corrodes Gelco damper hinge plates and pivot arms until they seize open or bind half-shut. You get cold air dropping into the living room in the Pier Bowl, and the damper won’t close. The repair is a replacement damper assembly, not a full firebox rebuild – but we need to see the shell condition first.
- Rusted-through multi-flue caps and spark arrestor screens – On older Spanish-style homes in 92672, the cap mesh rusts through and detaches from years of marine-layer exposure. Birds move in. Debris piles onto the smoke shelf. We replace the cap and clear what got in before it becomes a firebox problem.
- Spalling mortar and cracked crowns around the Gelco insert – When a Gelco insert is set into an original masonry fireplace, the surround absorbs moisture all year. Cracks open in the crown, water seeps down to the firebox surround, and the insert’s clearances degrade. We repair the crown, seal the surround, and reset the seal before it reaches the point of structural damage.
- Corroded firebox refractory panels and smoke shelf pitting – Un-capped or poorly seated flues let salt air reach the firebox directly. The refractory seams pit and corrode. We replace the panels and smoke shelf, then fix the cap issue that caused it so you’re not doing this again in three years.
- Weak, yellow flames on Gelco gas inserts – High humidity near the coast fouls burners and corrodes pilots faster than you’d see in Mission Viejo or Rancho Santa Margarita. If the flame looks yellow and lazy but the glass is clean, the burner or pilot usually needs service. Venting issues produce the same symptom, so we check both before touching anything.
Gelco Service in San Clemente: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
The marine layer that rolls over the Capistrano Bight at night keeps exterior masonry and metal damp for most of the year. That’s what drives Gelco failures here, not heavy burning. In the beachside core of 92672, from the Pier Bowl up through the southwest neighborhoods, service calls run heavy toward cap and crown replacement. The chimney may have barely been used in months, yet the damper is stuck and the cap mesh is gone to rust. Compare that to inland Mission Viejo, where the same Gelco unit mostly needs creosote sweeping and a damper cable adjustment. Salt air changes the failure mode. It means a chimney cleaning in San Clemente should always include a cap and damper inspection, because that’s where Gelco units on the coast fail first. We’ve seen rusted paddles on dampers that still open partially, screens gone completely, and crown mortar you could crumble with your thumb, on chimneys that looked perfectly fine from the ground. A standard sweep would’ve missed all of it.
Gelco Models & Products We Service in San Clemente
We work on Gelco wood-burning fireplace inserts, Gelco gas fireplace inserts, factory-built metal fireboxes with multi-flue caps, and masonry fireplace surrounds with original damper assemblies. When parts are needed, we fit OEM Gelco dampers, caps, and refractory panels where they’re available. When Gelco has discontinued a model or back-ordered a component, we match it with quality aftermarket parts sized to the actual flue and firebox dimensions, not whatever’s closest on a shelf. We keep common damper assemblies, cap screens, and refractory panels stocked for faster turnaround in San Clemente. If a firebox shell has rusted past safe service, we say so plainly. Repair makes sense when the shell and flue are sound. Replacement makes sense when corrosion has eaten into the structure itself.

FAQs – Gelco Chimney Cleaning in San Clemente
My Gelco damper in my 92672 beach home is stuck half-open – can you fix it without replacing the whole firebox?
Yes, in most cases we replace the damper assembly and hinge plate, not the firebox. The question is whether the surrounding firebox shell is still sound. We scope the firebox and flue, check for rust through the seams, then decide. If the shell is intact, it’s a damper job. If the shell has rusted through, we’ll tell you and show you the scope footage. Call (833) 805-3229 and we’ll give you an honest answer, free.
Why does my Gelco cap keep rusting out so fast near the coast?
Salt-laden moisture from the marine layer sits on the cap mesh and fasteners for most of the year in San Clemente. Standard galvanized caps can’t hold up to it. We fit stainless or coated replacements and check the crown seal at the same time, because water getting in around the crown is what accelerates the rust cycle. The fix lasts when the cap material matches the environment.
Do I need a Level 2 inspection or just a sweep on my Gelco insert?
If you’ve lived in the home a while and get an annual sweep, a Level 1 check during the cleaning is usually enough. If the home is new to you, you’ve had a chimney fire, or the insert was installed before you bought it, we recommend a Level 2, which includes the video scope of the full flue. In San Clemente’s salt air, a Level 2 is also worth doing if your cap is missing or the damper has rusted, because both let moisture into the firebox you can’t see without a camera.
My Gelco gas insert flames look weak and yellowish – is that the burner or the venting?
Could be either, and coastal humidity makes both more likely. A corroded pilot or fouled burner produces weak, yellow flames even when the firebox is clean. But a partially blocked flue or a rusted damper hanging into the flue path does the same thing. We check the burner assembly and the vent run together, because fixing one while ignoring the other just moves the problem around.
Can you repair spalling mortar and a cracked crown on an older Spanish-style chimney, or does it need rebuilding?
Most of the time it’s repairable. We remove loose mortar, re-point the spalled areas, and seal the crown. Rebuilding is only necessary when the masonry itself has shifted or the crown has cracked through in multiple places. We’ll scope it and show you what we found before recommending anything. Call (833) 805-3229 and we’ll look at it together.
